About Us

The Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association (FSUFPA) is representative of various fire protection associations, the provincial disaster management centre and regionally represented landowner organisations who wish to organise for the purpose of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act.

The purpose of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998 (NVFFA) is to safeguard communities, the economy and environment from uncontrolled veld, forest and mountain fires (wildfires) throughout the Republic.

The Free Sate Umbrella Fire Protection Association NPC (FSUFPA) is a public benefit organisation registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) as a Non-Profit Company and as a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) with the Department of Social Development as per the NPO Act.

Our FPA members serves more than 1780 individual landowners while our corporate members include ESKOM, and TRANSNET. The FPA member’s combined area of operations currently covers approximately 650052km, 50.7% of the total surface area of the Free State Province. 773832km or 59.60% of the Free State caries an extremely dangerous fire danger rating with our FPA member’s area of operations covering 558522km or 72,17% of this extreme high-risk area.

Working on Fire is a major partner with 20 of the 24 Working on Fire Teams in the Free State based with FSUFPA members.

FSUFPA is a permanent member of the Provincial Fire Services Advisory Committee (ProfSAC) and the FS Provincial Disaster Management Centre Advisory Forum whom we advise on matters pertain to integrated wildfire management in the province and includes:

  • Development of Operational Standards and best practice guidelines
  • Investigate and advise on new equipment and techniques relating wildfire management
  • Provide the PDMC advisory forum with information regarding wildfire incidents and developments in the FS province
  • Provide operational information to relevant stakeholders during fire season
  • Provision of relevant training
  • Liaise and engage with all relevant stakeholders pertaining to integrated wildfire management
  • Resource coordination
  • Advise Disaster Management structures on matters pertaining integrated wildfire management
